Vocational School

 

Going back to school is something that many folks transitioning out of the military decide to do. In addition to the many skill sets that you may have built during your time in the service, going back to school is an opportunity to prepare yourself for success in a new career and have a fun transitioning back into the civilian workforce. While going back to school is not for everybody, it is certainly something that should be considered by all members getting out of the service.

There are several options in going back to school and getting an education – and several considerations and requirements for each.

Professional Trade Schools and Vocational Schools

General Information: Professional Trade and Vocational Schools are a good option for people who have decided that a four year University is not for them, or that have already selected a career choice that does not require one. Many critical functions in our economy rely on professions who’s training comes through trade schools and vocational schools. Some examples of careers that you would achieve through trade or vocational schools are graphic design, criminal justice, nursing, web design, and many more. There are several levels of education that you can achieve through Trade or Vocational Schools including a Vocational Certificate and/or a Vocational Degree.

Requirements: Requirements for Vocational Schools are generally very limited. These schools do not require SAT scores and will rarely view admissions guidelines based on high school GPA. In most cases, they will want to understand your work experience.

Preparation and Getting In: Vocational Schools are located throughout the country and have programs offered throughout the year. Unlike four-year universities, there are many options of courses and programs beginning throughout the year, making it more flexible for military personnel separating from the service. Preparation for a Vocational School will be given by the individual school on a case-by-case basis.

Cost and Options for payment: The cost of Vocational Schools varies depending on the length and type of training you are going after. It is possible to receive grants and loans for scholarships, however it is typically on a case-by-case basis.
